United Breweries registers the trademark Gold Bier Pilsner

United Breweries Holding (formerly Heineken) has applied for registration of the Gold Bier Pilsner trademark for the 32nd class of the Nice Classification, including beer and soft drinks. Pilsner beer is produced by Czech Plzensky Prazdroj, a. s.

After the departure from Russia of the popular Irish Guinness stout (dark ale beer), bottled at United Breweries facilities under license from the British Diageo, the company began production of its similar products — Black Sheep. In 2023, the holding applied for registration of this trademark, but in February 2024, Rospatent refused. Now the United Breweries is trying to overturn this decision of the department through the court.

According to Sergey Zuykov, patent attorney and managing partner of Zuykov and partners, the word Pilsner has long been an unguarded element, as it is a type of beer, so there should be no problems in registering.

After the increase in import duties on beer from unfriendly countries to Russia, we should expect a noticeable decrease in retail sales of such products due to a significant increase in price, says Igor Havsky, co-owner of the SVAM Group distributor and Gletcher brewery. In the near future, imported beer may rise in price by an average of 40-50%, Pavel Shapkin, head of the National Alcohol Policy Development Center, expects.
